M A K I N G H I S T O R Y : A B U L O V A T I M E L I N E Founded in New York in 1875 by Joseph Bulova, an immigrant from Bohemia, Bulova went on to become a horological pioneer boasting a track record peppered with industry firsts… • Bulova was the first watch manufacturer to standardise mass production, in 1912, at its base in Switzerland, and in 1919 it was the first company to offer a men’s wristwatch collection. • Bulova was the first watch brand to advertise on the radio – it sponsored the time checks on the hour, with the tagline ‘America runs on Bulova time’ – and in 1941 the company created the world’s first television commercial. • After World War ll, Bulova retrained injured war veterans at its school of watchmaking, rehabilitating thousands until 1990, when it closed. • As innovators in the science behind watch manufacture, Bulova created the world’s first fully electronic watch, the Accutron, in 1961. • Bulova went into space in 1971, when its watch was worn during the Apollo 15 lunar mission. • In recent decades, Bulova has introduced the Precisionist, a new type of quartz movement eight times more accurate than the standard, and the curved chronograph movement, a feat of engineering that took two years to develop.
